Question
i have a large 55 gallon tank with 3 grey bichirs a 12" lung fish and a 10" spiny pleco and 3 bamboo plants. the substrate is sand since i have bottom feeders. the light is a 36" 30 watt uv bulb that is common in all pet stores. also i run the mini led halite system lights at night to add a twilight affect to the tank. i have floating drift wood that is new and i cleaned it for several hours before adding it to the tank. the problem is im getting this thick white slimy fungus, algae or sludge growing on the new branch only and not on the other floating piece of drift wood its sitting on to submerge it. i run a fluval 405 canister filter so i know im not over feeding and undercycling the water what if you know is going on here please let me know so i can figure this out.

Answer
Hi Mitchell,
What it sure sounds like is your tank has aquarium fungus. This is common actually, it stems from leftover food that gets into crevices of your tank decorations, then fungus takes ahold and begins to thrive there. Probably the best thing you can do is take the decoration out and scrub it really good (ideally with an aquarium algae scrubber) under running water, rinse it really well and see how that works. Be careful with feeding your fish, try yo make sure the fish clean up all their food and little particles don't float around.
Sometimes it can take a little work to get rid of the fungus completely, it really helps to vacuum the gravel and do water changes more frequently as well at least for several days.

I really hope this helps!
Best of luck,
Karen~
