Question
Fred is a 3 year old feeder that grew to 11 1/2 inches in a 30 gal. tank.  I just noticed he has a torn upper lip.  Not sure what I need to do to help it heal or to make sure he's getting enough to eat.  Can you suggest any remedies?

Answer
Hi Vicky
I'm assuming he injured it on something in the tank?  Be sure to remove anything sharp that's in there.  Just be sure to keep the water quality pristine-ammonia and nitrites at 0 ppm, and nitrates under 20 ppm.  You can add some MelaFix and I would also add some PimaFix.  The MelaFix is a natural antibacterial remedy that works great on injuries and such.  PimaFix is also natural, and has some antibacterial properties, but also helps with fungal infections.  Fungal infections usually show up as a secondary infection to injuries or infections.  Both are safe to use together, won't harm the fish or anything in the tank including the beneficial bacteria.  If it doesn't look like it's starting to heal after using those for a few days, let me know, you may be dealing with another problem like a bacterial infection.  As long as he's eating something, even a few nibbles, that should be fine.  Even if he's not for the next few days, fish can go for a few weeks without eating.  Just as long as he starts to soon.

Good luck and let me know if you have more questions.
