Question
Hello, i have a problem with my Chiclid. The other day i noticed out of the blue the top of the tank was all foamy like bubble bath was in it. Also the water was very cloudy. We have done a complete water change ( nothing different than what we normally do) and yet the water has gone a bit cloudy again, but no bubbles on top. My chicild also has developed a white lump on top of his head, ( it seems to have gotten smaller now.) I was just wondering what could be the problem? He is in a tank on his own as he is just to aggressive to be put in a tank with other fish. I have attached some pictures of the fish and as you can see the water is cloudy. He did seem a bit to laid back when you go near his tank, which normally isn't the case. But now he is moving a bit more but he keeps opening his mouth wide for no apparent reason and shaking his body at the same time. I would be very grateful if you could help me.
Thank you. Leanne

Water looks cloudy, this is after a water change.

Answer
Hello Leanne:  I am sorry to hear that your fish is sick. I'd like to start here with your water change.  It is never a good idea to do a complete water change because tank water is a delicate Balance of chemicals and bacteria... There are good bacteria and bad bacteria in your tank and you want to keep that balance in check else you end up with fish disease.  Normally I do a 10-20 percent water change on a weekly basis... while gravel vacuuming.  A clean tank keeps the chemical and bacteria in check.  It sounds to me like your fish has a bacterial infection of some kind... Maracyn and Maracyn-two used together are what I use for bacterial infections.  You can pick these up at the local aquarium... try to avoid pet stores and just stick to an aquarium... they are likely to have a better selection and the staff there will be able to help you out with your choice.  You will also want to take in a sample of water for them to test... many aquariums do this for free.  If your tank has a heater you will want to set it 76 degrees for a while... until you see the infection getting better... most cichlids like to have the tank at a range of 76-82 degrees.  The shaking may be part of the bacterial infection as well... so I would treat it as such and see what happens.  The white foamy water is probably due to the complete water changes... you have "new tank syndrome" when water is changed completely.  you should consider adding a small school of neon tetras to the tank now and let them help bring the tank back to balance.  I would not treat he water with any of the products like CYCLE because of the antibacterial you are about to add... let the little fish do the work and by all means consider adding in a handful of live plants.  Neon Tetra's are small and fast and should be safe from your cichlid... even my convict can not catch the tetra though she still tries to after a year... I still have all 12 of them... please keep me posted as to the progress of your fish... Dave
