Question
Hey, a few years back,my guppies bred but the fry didn't survive and most of my fish died and I left the fish-keeping hobby behind me going to reptiles. Well, i'm back again and have two female platies and a male. So, my question is, how do i get them to breed and any other info would be great!.

Answer
Hi Jay,
Its really no problem at all to get platies to breed, they are quite as easy as any livebearer. Just give them some time and you'll have pregnant females soon who will have their broods of 20 or more every 4 weeks or so depending on her age and size. Provide plenty of floating plants and clusters of plants in the corners of the tank to provide refuge for the fry. They are very easy to feed with powdered flake food, baby brine shrimp or petstore baby fish food.

Keeping on top of water quality is -very- important with all fish. They must have a cycled tank (if you aren't sure what that is visit here- http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php ) and the water quality must be kept in check with weekly or twice weekly partial water changes always making sure to add water dechlorinator. The biggest cause of fish deaths is poor water quality so this is just an important thing to mention.

Best of luck!!
Karen~
