Question
QUESTION: I have 4 south american. 2 African in a 56 gal tank after setting my tank up with new fish all was well then weeks later the fish are shaking side to side and rubbing hard on rock and all  the plants. can you help save my fishes?

ANSWER: Hi there,
Sounds like a water quality issue going on (like polluted water). I'd do an immediate 30-50% water change (make sure all new water is treated with a water conditioner and the temp is equal or just a bit warmer). You may have to repeat these water changes until your fish get better. Oh and make sure to gravel vacuum well too.

Testing your water would be important now. Your water's readings should be- ammonia-0 nitrite-0 nitrate-20 or less.

*Keep a close eye on them. Sometimes scratching can mean parasites so look closely at their skin for odd discolorations or spots.

Best of luck! Hope this helps!

QUESTION: hello, well i have done 4 50% changes tryed paragaurd. they still are shaking and now there is like black mold spots on the lips top of body of my blood parrot {fm}  and most rasie and lower there dorsal fins rapidly and shake. i'm worried about my fish. my water test was good, well thanks for any and all help - barrie

Answer
Hi Barrie,
I'm not sure about the "mold" spots. That's something I've never seen before. Black spots can be from ammonia or chemical burn and now it is trying to heal. The best thing in this case is to change 50% everyday and maybe try adding some salt. I don't think the Paraguard is working but you are the best one who can tell that. The only other cause to black spots on fish are caused by a parasite but its needs a bird host so this is typically only found in ponds.

So I think your best bet is water changes and maybe try some aquarium salt.

I hope your fish recover!
