Aquarium sand

Question
Hi,
I am wondering about using play sand as a substrate. I know it takes a lot of cleaning to work. I love the thought of using sand but I have always been scared of the clogging the filter problem. I actually prefer the play sand look over traditional sands for substrates. And it is so cheap. Can sand tear up a filter Or just cause a clog that has to be unclogged?
Also, will play sand make the chance of this happening a bigger concern?
I am in need of a cheap substrate for a new 55 gallon. Thanks so much.

Answer
Hi Shirley,
You can definitely use Play sand in your aquarium. All that's needed is to just rinse, rinse, rinse, and rinse some more. You may still have some cloudiness but it should go away eventually with water changes/good filtration.

Unless you have very feisty fish stirring up your sand, the sand clogging the filter typically won't be much of a problem in most cases. Just make sure the sand is kept clean and gently stir it frequently in all places to make sure anaerobic conditions don't develop, try not to have too deep a sand bed either. Usually no more than 2 inches is best.

I found that Silica sand which is similar but not exactly like play sand works wonderfully well in aquariums. It is the same color, but it does have a larger grain size. It proves easier to vacuum and doesn't get stirred up in a flurry by fish either. Just something you might want to look for too. It is also usually inexpensive.

I hope this helps!
