Question
Hiya !
I was jsut wondernig how much is too much in a fish tank? At the moment we have 3 balloon mollies (pregnant!!), 12 platies and about 50 guppies. They are in a 3ft tank. about 40 gallons. theres also a 600/l/h ehiem canister running on it. Anyway to see if its over crowded?

Answer
Two factors I would be concerned about would be overcrowding and water conditions. These two things go hand-in hand. The more fish you have, the more waste there is produced. If you keep up on your water changes and no ammonia builds up you will be fine. There is a greater risk of stress due to so many fish in the tank, but as long as you stick to smaller hardy fish, such as what you have now everything will go fine. The most important thing to focus on is having a good clean filter and water changes. There are water test kits you can purchase at your local pet shop. I would recommend that anyone who has a aquarium to buy a kit because ammonia is a silent killer. Hope you enjoy your aquarium. :)
