Question

Diseased Fish
Hi Nathan,

I could not continue the previous question-answer thread.
Here is the status.

Per your suggestion, 1. I have changed 30% of water; 2.
Discontinued Maracyn; 3. Put the carbon filter back

As I said before that two fishes are active and one fish is
still lying bottom of the tank. I can see clearly its
disease, white spots all over its body. Also I notice the
skin peeling. Please refer to the attached picture. Do you
still suggest me to perform water change? if so, when can I
do as I changed the water yesterday itself.

Please let me know if I could administer any other
medication or so.

Thanks,

Smitha

Answer
Hi Smitha,

Change another 30% of the water, three days after the previous one.

The peeling skin may be due to a pH problem. Check the pH with a test kit to make sure it's in the ideal range (7.2-7.6).

Slowly lower or raise the pH if that's the case. You can find a pH lower/raiser at your local fish store. As a precaution, add the chemical to the new water you're about to change in, rather than the tank itself. Remember to be careful with the pH chemical - many are corrosive.

If there's no problem with the pH, then I'd perform 30% water changes every 3 days.

From what I gather from the pictures, the infection is most likely fungal, since the Maracyn would have worked if it was bacterial. It certainly does not sound like a parasite to me at all, because a parasite would've affected ALL your fish. Fungal would make sense, because fungal infections cannot affect healthy fish (the other 2). Your diseased fish was likely recovering from the first infection, and a fungus took advantage of it. In that case, treating with a Fungal medication, such as Jungle Lab's Fungus Clear, or PimaFix will help your fish.

Good Luck, and Happy Fishkeeping!
