Goldfish breeding

Question
I am a relatively new goldfish hobbyist. Recently managed to spawn two females (a gold fantail and a red&white Ruykin) with two males caught in the wild (wild type carassus). Lots of little fry in two aquariums now. I am attempting to get a new variety, which hopefully will have an elongated body shape with long finnage, something probably like a comet. I know that the first generation will probably look like the wild type and it requires several cross breedings to get to what I am dreaming (if I ever get there). Anyhow, I have been looking on the net for such attempts by others and surprisingly the existing info is very stingy... could you lead my to any site on the matter?

Answer
Hi!

Very interesting project you have going here. We can never be sure of the exact outcome of the crossings but I can bet you will have a sturdy and hardier strain of goldfish due to the wild goldfish genetics. You may end up with a slightly elongated fish with flowing fins, perhaps a double-tail and the fish may be bronze and develop an orange/white coloration later or may stay with its wild colors. We can never know. The best thing to do since I myself have never read or heard of anybody else having the opportunity to spawn fancy goldfish with wild-caught goldfish, is to see what turns out. Make sure to photograph the young fish (I'm sure you will).

I'm curious to see the outcome.

You might definitely try posting on the forum at

That is a very informative and overall excellent goldfish website.

Good luck!
