Question
Hi Chris,

My husband and I have purchased a used 125 gallon tank and would like to know what size heater you recommend for this size tank.  THANKS.

Answer
Hi Lori;

Heater size depends on the average room temperature compared to the temperature you want your tank to be maintained. Here is a link to a formula that will help you calculate;

http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/tipsandtables/l/blheatersize.htm

The chart doesn't go up to your size tank but just use the instructions below it and use a combination of heaters that gets you the wattage you need to keep the temperature consistent. It may take several days as you make sure they work properly and as you adjust them but you'll get the hang of it. Just don't add any fish until you have it under control and it has maintained a steady temperature for a couple of days. With a large tank like that the room temperature doesn't affect it as quickly as it would in a smaller amount of water.

Here is a link to my web page about new tanks too that will help you get through the break-in period;

Have fun and I hope everything goes well!
