Tank safe objects

Question
I can't really afford all of the spiffy stuff that is sold at pet stores. I have bought a few things, but I'm still not satisfied. I'm a very crafty person and would like to get creative with their habitat but am unsure what should and should not be used. What would you say is fish safe? Rocks from outside?
I read on a website that toys can be put into a tank, but I thought the wrong plastic would kill my fish/african dwarf frog. I guess I should be asking, What would you suggest that I DON'T put in a fish tank and what are some random things that you would suggest? Thank you!

Answer
Hannah,

other than the obvious aquarium safe decorations, I would not put too many things not made for water. Whatever you place in there, it needs to be boiled for no less that 2 hours and cooled down before putting it in the tank. Anything safe for children as long as it says none toxic should be ok. Nothing with sharp edges or points. Those can hurt your fish. I know that some things can be expensive, but they are made just for aquariums. If you use silk or plastic plants make sure they say aquarium safe. I am a Betta breeder and my tanks only have filters heaters and gravel. Bottom line is make sure it is none toxic, you boil it for 2 hours, and there are no sharp edges or points.
