Freshwater tank setup

Question
I bought a used 125 gallon acrylic aquarium and I've got a few questions.

The aquarium has two overflow boxes in the back corners already plumbed.  It also has what looks like two power heads for the return on the back center.

What kind of filter do I need?  I'm kind of torn between canister and wet/dry filters.  I want live plants.  Does one work better than the other with plants?

I was also thinking of adding a refugium into the mix; specifically the Reefugium 100M.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Answer
Hello,
what you have is essentially a saltwater set up.
that said, you can for sure us it for fresh.
since it is already drilled with overflows may as well go with a wet/dry or refugium full of plants to act as a scrubber filter.
you will need an external pump a few fittings valves etc...check out the reef forums for info.
keep your heater and any other hardware in the wet/dry refugium to eliminate clutter in the main tank.
since it is acrylic it is more easily scratched etc...
check out some sights on "Dutch Aquariums" for plant ideas etc...
if  you use high power lights, ie, halides do not put them too close to the tank as it can melt the acrylic...that said, a good set of halides approx 24" from the tank would be some great lighting....also compacts would work well too.
lots of options here...enjoy your tank...
