White Fungus on Goldfish ?

Question
We have recently introduced goldfish into an outside pond measuring c 5 ft wide by 4ft deep - there are 6 of them with 4 sarasosa comets and 4 shubunkins & 2 small tench. Ive noticed in the last couple of days one of the goldfish has spent much time listless by a plant although will move and swinm away - it has white blotches that look a bit like fur on its side and I wondered if this could be a fungal infection - if so how do I treat and is it infectious for the rest of the fish ?

Answer
Hello Tanya-

First thing's first - Isolate the sick goldfish. What you've found is most definitely a fungus. You'll probably want to dose the other fish as well, just for prevention, but if you decide to do this, you can do so in lesser quantity.

Once you've got the sick fish in his own tank, add a dose of aquarium salt and start medicating with a medicine like CopperSafe, or Maracyn and Maracyn 2.

Don't reintroduce them until all fish seem to be in good condition, and be sure to keep some aquarium salt in your pond. Salt will kill off bacteria, and hopefully ward off future infections.

Hope this was helpful!
