compatable fish with a beta

Question
I have 1 beta in a 1-1/2 gallon glass aquarium. There is no air going in, since I was told it was not needed. I used filtered water 2 times a week, or more if needed, to change it to keep it clean. I am looking for some type of fish that can live in this type of envirionment that will keep the tank clean. I tried a snail, but it died. Any ideas? I plan on only getting 1 more fish or whatever to keep the tank clean.  Anna

Answer
Hi Anna,

I would not recommend getting another fish for your tank, as almost all other fish require larger, filtered tanks. Snails are also large waste producers and need suprisingly big tanks.

However if you want to give a natural touch and help keep nitrates down, try adding a few live plants. For a tank your size you can comfortably house some java fern, or anubias nana - small, pretty plants that live attached to driftwood. (The driftwood needs to be soaked for a few days or it will leach harmless but ugly brown tannins into the water.)

Remember: the best tank cleaner is you! :)

Hope this helps,

Prue.
