Goldfish with ich

I have three small goldfish in a twenty gallon tank. Today, I noticed that they have ich, so I started treating them with ridich. I was wondering if I should also add aquarium salt. I already have half a teaspoon of salt per gallon in their tank, but I wasn't sure if it would be beneficial to add more while they're sick.

Hi Rachel,

The idea that goldfish thrive with salt added to the tank is a complete myth. Salt reduces the toxicity of nitrates and nitrites but in a properly maintained aquarium it is totally redundant.

It wouldn't be beneficial to add more whilst they are ill, just push on with the propiertary treatment and see how it goes. Most treatments are extremely effective as ich is the most common disease on the scene.
