Poseidons tank

Question
Hi Prue!
I remember how you said that my betta Poseidon's tank was too small for him, so I got a 10 gallon tank for him. I also got gravel, plants, and an ornament. Right now Poseidon is alone in the tank, but there is so much space, I am thinking about adding some other fishies. What fish would you recommend for me to put in with him? He seems a lot happier now that he is out of his old 1/2 gallon tank. THe new tank doesn't have a filter yet, so how often should I change the water, since it is a pretty big tank?
Thanks again!!!!!!

Answer
Hi Natalya,

This is very good news, and I am glad to hear that Poseidon is happy. :)

There are several species of fish that are suitable betta tankmates, but it really depends on the temperament of the fish.

If Poseidon is a pretty calm fish then you may consider 3 or so white cloud mountain minnows or 3 bronze corydoras catfish.

The white clouds are very cute little silver fish that like to be in groups, so if you get them get a few. They swim in all levels of the tank and so help to make the tank look less 'empty'.

Cory cats are small catfish that also need to be in a small clan as they snuggle up together to sleep. They are really sweet and they also eat leftover food from the tank bottom, but still need to be fed their own catfish pelleted food.

There are other options, these are the ones I have had success with. Ask around and good luck!

P.S: With water changes, while Poseidon is the only inhabitant you could maybe get away with water changes every second week. I usually change all my tanks' water weekly but I keep messy fish. If/when you get tankmates, you will need to go back to weekly water changes.
