reducing tank temperature during a heat wave...

Question
we're experiencing a heat wave and i noticed my aquarium is a good 10-15 degrees warmer than usual.  one of my cichlids have unfortunately passed on - though don't know if it's because of the heat.  is there a dangerous temperature and/or how can or should i reduce the temperature?  (I've already unplugged the heater).

Answer
Hi Lisa,
The problem is not so much temperature as lack of oxygen. Warmer water holds much less oxygen so as the water warms, fish have trouble breathing.  Many run into big problems around 85+ if there isn't lots of oxygen going into the tank.

The quick solution is to put some icecubes in a bag and float that bag in the aquarium.
