Question -
i just bought a ten gallon tank with a ryukin, two black moores, one caped goldfish and a fan tail. i thought it would be too full but the person at the shop said that with a strong filter, they would be fine. i have a box filter ment for a fifty gallon with all three types of filtration. the fish are fine but i'm woundering if its a little to full. the fish have no problem with swimming against the current but i'm afraid they'll polute the water too much thanx for all your help

Hello Karen-

I would say it's one or two fish full...It will be able to last a month or so, but once the fish start growing they will probably fight for space and overtax the filter.

If you had to return a fish, I'd say the fantail, just because it will probably grow slower than the others and become the scapegoat - But it's really up to you what you want to do.

Hope this is useful,

its already been 2 years but they arn't fighting for space and the filter is working fine. i just found out that it was suppoesed to be a filter for a 115 galon aqauruim. The fish are good but there hand like fins are only half as long as their tails. some1 told me the hand like fins were suppoed to be the same size as the tails. they have grown dubble their size though but in the last year, they seem to be slowing up. now they are 1.5 inches without tail. are they too little? because i feed them very little and I'm woundering if they are hungry all the time. is brown algea good or bad because i have some on the walls of my tank. My fantail's tail was white when i bough it ans now its turning orange. is that bad? thank you for answering. i know my questions are comfusing.

Answer
Hello again-

Most fish will "grow to containment," meaning that if there isn't enough space for them to grow larger, they will just stop growing. It's not really normal for them, and it's really up to you on whether you want to keep them all together or not. Brown algae is all right; it's not really anything that will kill your fish but you should scrape it out so that it doesn't remove all the dissolved oxygen from the water. Fantails and Moors do fine on low food, as they have a tendency to get bloated and develop swim bladder problems.

As for the pectorals ("paddle fins") being the same size as the tails, that's just poppycock. :)

And it is perfectly normal for your fish to change colors. Don't be surprised if your Moors end up white. :)

Hope I answered everything,
