My fish keeps having babies.

Question
I got a female dalmation molly around February. We kept her by herself for a few weeks, but it seemed like she was lonely so we got another fish, I believe it was a male white molly, well he lasted about a day, then my dalmation molly killed him. So around the middle of April my dalmation molly had babies, we saved four, not sure how many she ate before we found them. We figured that was that since she is by herself, but today she had atleast eleven more babies. So I'm just wondering how in the world she keeps having babies and will she have more babies. Thankyou.

Answer
Hey Rachel,

Yes. She will.

It's kinda odd, and gross, and I really wish I had more tact in saying this... but female live bearing fish can store sperm for upto 6 months. Sperm is delivered to the female via a "penis like" structure that extends off the male, and delivers tiny packets of sperm. The female then can hang onto it and reuse it later. Odd, but nature finds a way. So, for the next 6 months or so, every 4-5 weeks, expect somewhere between 3 and 100 fry. And, she may break the birthing up over the course of a week, so you could get 3 today, 10 tomorrow, 4 saturday, 11 sunday, and 75 monday. So, expect to see more tiny specs darting around!

Good luck, and enjoy breeding!
