QuestionI have 2 Oscar's, both of which are approximately 4 or 5 months old. The 70 gallon tank is set at 80 degrees Fahrenheit. It seem's as though some of the egg's are being sucked into the above ground filter, do egg's generally float or sink? And will an underground filter affect the egg's as well? Aside from these problems am i doing everything accordingly to hatch these batch of eggs?
AnswerHi Joseph,
The eggs neither sink nor float. They should be stuck to a hard surface such as the bottom of the tank or a rock.
I do not use undergravel filters with cichlids (like oscars) because cichlids dig down and expose the undergravel filter plates, thereby rendering them useless for filtering.
Also, the hatchlings easily fall through the undergravel filter plates and get stuck underneath and die.
