Rocks for aquariums

Question
I have some rock that I removed from a river in the hills of South Carolina and I was wondering if they would be OK to put in my tank with the cichlids (two Metrioclima lombardi and two Melanochromis auratus). The rocks look like either granite or basalt. I may be able to use my webcam if you need to see a picture of them but the quality of the picture won't be great.

Answer
Thomas,                                                                Both of these rocks work very well in an aquarium. If you decide to use them bleach in a mild solution 1/4 cup for 5 gallons. After they soak rinse well and let dry for 24 hours to let the rest of the chlorine evaporate. This is to make sure you do not introduce parasites to your tank. Just some food for thought,,,your cichlids run at an 8.0 to 8.2 ph........You can put beautiful corals in there also. The corals and seashells will buffer the water and help it maintain your ph levels..Good Luck,Tina
