Question
QUESTION: Hi!
I have rescued 6 gold fish, 3 are about 9 month (2"), 2 about 2 year old ( 1/2 "), 1  5 month. I got them a 75 gal tank on the 7/3/08  about 1 1/2 month old;with 459 Fluval and 299 penguin, water change evebyweek 25%, use Kordon products and Foster & Smith god bacteria. Media I use in Fluvl is Zero=Carb, super-Max and polishing pads. I did not know aout the fresh water itch until they moved from their old 30 gal to the75 gal tank. in the new tank they develoed red (blood) streeks and yet the eat and swim. One seems to be leaking blood from the tail fin, but acting normaly, anothe developed swim blader infection. I've treated theitch with Super ick cure acording toinstructions; 96 hours. One fish still has a bit of a white spot on its tail, all though it is tranceparent and a few still GENTLY rubing on the gravel.  Do I repeat the treatment? Is there something better? I've finished7/15/08, do I have to change the new media? What do I do about red tail ( blood streacks all have them) and swim blder. I have never had fish before. There are so many products and media I do not know what is the best and what to use. My food is Hakari brine shrimpwith spirulina and blood worms. I've read that the yang ones should eat thee times (at least) a day andthy are growing and developig well. I al so use Kordon Amquil to try to maintain low amonia levels. Have 4 plants and 3 snails. Should I uase multi vitamin and vitamin C ( to iproove their health) if yes whitch one? I fell in love with tem ad want them happy and healthy!!!!
Please help.

ANSWER: All your problems are caused by your tank not being cycled properly. You should never add fish to an uncycled tank, despite the circumstances.

Water changes should be 25% every other day until the tank is cycled, then go down to 30% twice a week.

The red fins are specemicia (excuse my spelling) and are caused by ammonia and poor water quality.

QUESTION: Hi,
What does it mean properly cycled?
What should I use for specemicia? I was told that it was not, since the fish is eating and swimming.
What do I do about the swim bladder infection.
And the itch ( after treatment), should I wait? Is so how long? What about the vitamins?

Thank you so much,

Gala

Answer
Copy and paste this into your browser to learn about cycling. ALL fish tanks should be cycled before fish are added.

Specemicia can't really be treated, just prevented. Increase water changes to every other day and cycle your tank and it should go away.

For swim bladder feed washed and shelled peas, add 2 tablespoons of aquarium salt (slowly) and cycle your tank.

LOL....itch....
Just continue with the ICH treatment as it says on the bottle. Vitamins are not needed if you are feeding a high quality pellet along with frozen foods, they are already vitamin enriched.
