Question
Last night I purchased 2 shark fish, 9 gold fish, 2 kisser fish and 1 catfish to clean the tank. We bought a 10 gallon tank to get us by for right now, they all seemed real happy. Today, two of our goldfish died and our tank is getting foggy are we doing something wrong? We have a filter and a heater and we plan to when I get a little more money to get a 90 gallon tank but until then which wont be too long what can I do ? What am I doin wrong? PLEASE HELP!

Answer
Olivia,                                                                Your fist mistake is mixing tropical and goldfish in the same and small tank. Your goldfish you would put maybe 2 in a ten gallon. They put out ten times the waste that the trops do. The second problem is you don't even have an established environment for them. You are going through new tank syndrome in the worst way. Toooooo many fish at once. Since you have such a small tank you have to decide if the death of your fish dont decide for you do you want goldies or tropicals. You can mix these guys , but you would need at least a 55 gallon tank. You are prob going to lose them all. Go get your larger tank. You have no ecosystem yet. As you add your fish you add bacteria to the tank which grows and drops  to the bottom and creates a biological system that eats the wastes.....of course you have to syphon to get rid of the solid wates.....what is happening now is you have a huge bacteria bloom in your tank/ You fish give off ammonia from their wastes....you bacteria eats that, but you have overwhelmed the bacteria and you have nothing to protect your fish. In a ten gallon tank I would never recommend more than one goldie and maybe a pleco. They will get huge and live 30 yrs if taken care of correctly......I would do some research on new tank syndrome and goldfish.......you may be able to prolong this by constant water changes , but this is hard on your fish...Never load a new tank. If you had trops I would say 3 the fist 3 weeks than one or two more....the rule is 1 inch of fish per gallon.......Good luck,,,,if you have more questions please ask ...Tina
