Corydoras

Question
Hello,

Our Cory's keep laying eggs, first bunch we removed from the tank, and put them in a littler one- but they never seem to come to anything so we isolated one bunch of them this time (the mollie's ate all the others!) and now- a week later- they are white- almost clear, they've gotten larger and there seems to be a white dot inside them. They're in a hatchery, but we don't know if they're fertilized/not fertilized? and what to do/expect if they hatch?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Rachel

Answer
Hi Rachel,
If they have a little dot inside, then it sounds like they are developing.  They should hatch in the next day or so.  The challenge with young corydoras is feeding them. They are very small.  You might try frozen baby brine shrimp, but in many cases, even that is too large for them. Probably the best thing is "green water".  Green water is water loaded with algae and tiny microorganisms. There are many ways to get this. Probably the fastest is to take a bucket of water, put it outside in the direct sun and soon you will have algae.  Some people start it off by putting a little bit of lettuce in the water.  Once you have green water, put a cup or two of it in the tank with the corydoras fry everyday or even more often.  Do this until they get large enough to eat frozen baby brine shrimp.
