Question
Hello :) I have a gold tiger barb fish that has something wrong with it but I have no idea what it is. A couple of days ago I noticed a spot on its side. Its a white/gray color with red around it. Could you please tell me what this is and how to treat it? It is not the only fish in the tank and I do not want to put the other ones at risk of getting sick. Thanks in advance!

Answer
Stephanie, I am so sorry it took so long to get back to you. It sounds like an ulcer. He may have been bitten or have rubbed against something. If he is still in there watch and see if he is rubbing on things this could be a sign of parasites and then we would treat the tank with something called coppersafe. It is an excellent medication it stays in your tank about thirty days and you do not have to remove the carbon. If he is not I would just treat the tank with a mild broad spectrum antibiotic called melafix. It is all natural made from tea tree's. If he is gone watch your other fish for signs of rubbing against thing's and treat as I said. The coppersafe is 1 tsp per 10 gallons. Good Luck, Tina
