27 day old cockatiel.

Question
Hi there.

I have a cockatiel baby that is 27 days old.  I think it may have yeast infection.  The crop looks very abnormal.  I am feeding three other babies and they seem to be fine.  The crop at the bottom is red, and is foaming at the top up into the neck.  It refuses to eat.  And the belly still looks kind of full.  Last time it took a little food was yesterday night (Monday 17th) at 10:00 p.m.  Im really worried and not sure what to do.  I have ask a few breeder friends that live out of my state, and they say it may have yeast infection and that i need to get set up to do a culture test.  But i dont have the equimpment yet or the right resorces.

Is there something i can get over the counter RIGHT now to try to treat the chick for yeast infection?  The crop just keeps moving around like its mixing up and the whole top part is all foam.  No white stuff around the mouth or no smell of sour crop.

Please get back to me when you can.

Thank you,
michelle grace

Answer
Hi Michelle,
I would urge you to take that lil guy/girl to a vet. If you can't take care of the problem yourself, your best bet is to take him/her to a vet. It could be a yeast infection, it could be sour crop. I'm not sure what it is that you are describing, for I've never encountered a problem like that. If the crop isn't emptying, it could be an impacted crop. Although I do know of some things to solve problems, I would reiterate that I am not a avian vet, and would never give medical advice. There is an "ask the veterinarian" section where you found me, this question is probably best suited for them. Good luck, Michelle, and I'm sorry I couldn't help you. Avian medicine, whether it's related to handfeeding or otherwise, just isn't my expertise. If I have/had a problem with any of my handfeds, I'd have an avian vet diagnose and treat them.
Best regards,
Linnie  :)
