A found Parakeet

Question
Hi,
I found a yellow parakeet outside two weeks ago. I think I brought it back to life as I have a parakeet and a cockatiel already. The question is that there seems to be a lump near it's vent area. I never saw that in any of my birds. It's also missing feathers around the vent area too plus it's tail feathers aren't looking that great either. I really don't want to spend $55.00 to take it to a vet. I just want to know if it could life threatening or contagious to my other birds in the house?

Answer
Hello Amy.  Thank you for your post.
The lump by it's vent could be a number of things.  It could be that he's gotten some seeds caught, and his vent is infected, which could be passed onto your other birds.  This would also explain the loss of the feathers around the vent area.
It could also be a tumor, but without seeing the bird, it's difficult for me to be able to tell for sure.
If you plan on keeping this poor little bird, then please spend the $55.00 for an Avian Vet, if you do not plan on keeping him, then find somebody who will be willing to spend the $55.00 for a vet.  He really needs to be seen.  This could be and probably is a life threatening thing for him.
Is there a refuge near you that can take him?
If you are having trouble locating one, I will be happy to help you find one in your area.  Just let me know what area you are in.

Please keep me informed on how this little critter is doing.

Good luck and God Bless.
