Question
hi there I have a question on my yearling. i have him entered in an in hand trail class and have been getting him ready the only problem I have come a cross is getting him to walk over tarps. I put it infront of his stall door and for a few days made him walk over it to get in and out. he did it fine on his own but a soon as you move it even a little away from the door he won't go over it I have put food down on it and he ate off of it and the odd time he might scramble across it half pushing me over which he never does anytime else how to I go about easing him into this and having him not run me over in the process I have tired everything and I am tired thank you so much

Answer
The only two things I can suggest to you is that you try join-up with your yearling, and in the center of your round pen have a tarp set out on the ground. When the horse "join's-up", try to take him over the tarp. If he refuses, try join-up again.

Do you know what join-up is and the process of doing it? If not, please contact me again. I hate to type it all up if you already know. ;)

OR just patience.

It will take consistency, remember. The horse may refuse to walk on it, but don't just instantly give up. Stand in the center of the tarp and try to pull him on with you. He will probably walk in circles around the tarp to avoid stepping on it... just keep at it. Eventually (it may take 30 or more minutes) he will probably step on it. Reward him for even one foot.

Good luck!
