Question
Since you are involved with the AQHA maybe you can help me. I went to look at a quarter horse last night and beautiful horse but we noticed that he's freeze branded on the right side of the neck at the hair line of the mane. The freeze brand is a number than a letter than three more numbers, do you have any idea of who, why,or what organization does this to their horses?

Answer
Hello Amber,

Alot of horses are freeze branded. Some organizations require the horse to be freeze branded before it can be sold/registered. BLM (Bureau of Land Management) is the association for Wild Mustangs. Also registered Arabians sometimes have this criteria.

However, if you are sure that this is a Quarter horse you are probably dealing with a Ranch/Farm brand. Many ranches and farms have a freeze mark specifically made for their bloodstock to promote their horses and to keep track of them as well. If this horse is registered more then likely the breeder-owner of this horse when it was foaled is who did the freeze mark. If not then look to see if this horse has been transferred and you can possibly find the answers there. Good luck on your search and best wishes.
