Question
hi i have a 2 1/2 yr old stud that is not even halter broke or anything and you can barely even pet him. we stated to mess with him a year ago but stopped because he got hurt really bad and we felt like we were pushing him to hard. he is in a pasture with 2 mares and a gelding and he is always by hisself. i also have a gelding i want to start working with. he is halterbroke and green broke. i want to be able to have both of these horses broke in every which way possible. i just dont have the money to hire some one to train them for me so i would like to do it myself i dont have much experience training horses at all but i do have all day to work with them through out the week i just need some tips from some proffesionals for how to go about this thank you

Answer
Hello Ashley,
Since you have time on your side you have time to do research! Go to your local library and check out every book about the subject you can find. I would especially look into Ray Hunt, Bill Dorrance, Tom Dorrance, and any other Natural Horsemanship material. Read it all and work with your easiest horse while you get a feel for what you're doing. Be careful, its easy to get hurt if you don't have experience starting horses, especially with the stud colt. Then when you think they are ready to ride I would invest in going to a colt starting clinic with a great trainer like Brian Neubert, Joe Wolter, or Buck Brannaman- they travel the country and do many clinics each year.
Good luck, enjoy the journey!
