breaking stallions

Question
I have just recently acquired a highly pedigreed foundation Appaloosa stud.  He is 8 years old, and has never been rode.  He has only been used for breeding.  He is very gentle and well mannered.  I am not a professional horse trainer, but I believe he can still be broke, based on his temperment.  In your opinion, can a well-mannered, 8-year-old stud still be broke to ride?

Answer
Hi Elena!

Yes.  He can be broke to ride....if you are willing to give him the special training and care that he will need to further his education in his partnership with humans.

I would have your vet or farrier recommend a local trainer who has experience in that breed and breaking them.  Have the trainer out to evaluate your stallion and discuss your goals with them.

I own/broke/ride and jump my 9 yr. old Arabian stallion "Baby"  as do my more advanced clients.  He is fine in the barn and arena with other horses (even mares) when under saddle.  But!  I have carefully trained him to respect and obey me and that I am the only and final authority on everything.  Not through violence or abuse but, through speaking to him in a language he understands and respects.

Having had him his entire adult life has also cemented our relationship.  You will not have that bond with yours.  So, you must start building it now and add to it always.

I do not suggest public trail riding with him and if you plan to show, you should know that there are special rules/classes for Stallions.

Get a good trainer, work with your stallion daily and you will be rewarded with an amazing one-of-a-kind relationship!

Good luck and remember to always wear an ASTM/SEI approved helmet!
