Horses together after foaling?

Question
I have two 5-year old phillies one of them foaled last night. I've never had the experience before. At 3 am when she started, a back leg came out, so I immediately called my brother to ask him what to do. He said to just stay back and watch. When he realized that the other horse was with her, he told me to get the other horse away from her, and keep her away for at least 2 or three days, because the other Philly would probably try to rob the colt away from her. That made sense to me, especially since the horse not foaling was the dominate of the two. Everything went well, but today I have a real problem. The two horses have never been apart, and the other horse is EXTREMELY upset by being seperated. I had a friend tell me that there really wasnt that big a danger of a horse "robbing" anothers foal, especially after the first few hours. What's your take on this? Do you think it would be a mistake to put them back together?

Answer
Once the two have bonded it would be difficult for another mare to separate a mother and colt, but that isn't to say that there wouldn't be a fight over the whole thing.  I would wait for at least 48 hours or so to make sure the colt knows who mom is.  If there is any way to allow the two to see one another without them being together that might help.
