Question
Hi there. We are looking at 12year old pony that has melenoma lumps under his tail. Does this increase chance of shortning his life. Can you advise whether it is wise to purchase a horse with melenoma . He is a white horse. Thanks for your advice
Regards Robyn

Answer
Robyn,
This purchase is not something I'd recommend. It is estimated that 80% of gray or white horses over 10 years old have melanomas. While they may not turn cancerous, there is a very real possibilty that the tumor can cause problems, especially with urination and defecation.
In addition to being painful for the horse, it could become very expensive for the owner.
  Good luck with your decision!
