Question
My 12 year old paint mare has developed a cough which has persisted for the last 2 weeks.   I wormed her on Feb. 12th with Ivermectin paste.   How can I help her?   Her appetite is very good--she runs, gallops, and still acts the same except for the coughing.

Answer
Hi Ande!
Tried to sent this last night but the site was down so I apologize fot the delay!

Your mare's cough could be allergy related as mountain cedar counts have been elevated here in Texas for the past few weeks.  How do her eyes and nose look?  Can you elicit the cough by pressing on her throat?  Does it seem worse while she's eating?  I'm also wondering about her hay if she is supplemented with any.  As expensive as it has been lately,I have seen many horse owners having to purchase some pretty musty looking stuff.  Her hay may need to be sprayed with water before she eats it to settle dust and mold spores.
Keep an eye on her condition and check her temperature every day if you can just to be sure she's not trying to develop anything more complicated.  Let me know if you have any other questions and let me know how it goes okay?
thank you!
