yellow belly turtles

Question
Hi- I have 2 yellow belly turtles- got them as babies last summer and they are getting quite large. We have them in a 15 gallon tank, with a light and platform. My question is this- what can we do with them once they are too large for the tank? I called a local pet store and they said to get a couple rosie goldfish. If they eat them, they should be able to take care of themselves if I release them to a local pond. What are your thoughts? thanks!

Answer
Hi Marcy,

This is why it's really important to think things through before getting pets.  Your turtles can live up to 30 years, so obviously it's a long-term commitment, or should be.  A 15 gallon tank is far too small for two sliders of that age--it's really too small for even one, and it doesn't sound like there's a filter or UVB light, both of which are very important for health.

The pet store was highly irresponsible in giving you that advice.  It's illegal to release pets into local waterways because it's hazardous to the native wildlife.  Don't do it.  Either find a private home for them, or contact a local reptile rescue to help.  And PLEASE think carefully next time you're considering a pet--think twice, and then think again, and make sure you do plenty of research first, so you know how much time, effort, and money will go into proper care.
