bloating in my aquatic turtle

Question
My 10-year old yellow bellied slider appears to be bloated.  He is eating fine and active; however, he is puffy around the openings of his shell shere his arms and legs are.  Generally, when he is out of the tank, the area at the top of his arms and legs is kind of sunken in and it is now puffy.  What does this mean?  Also, we just cleaned out his tank a couple of days ago.  Today, when I pulled him out of the water to look at him he felt oily.  Could that be his food?  We will clean the tank out again today.  I want to take him to the vet but am unsure about what questions to ask to know whether or not a vet is really knowledgeable about reptiles.  I look forward to your reply.  I tried to send a photo with this email but it said anti-spam load failed.  It is a jpeg file that I took of my turtle this morning.  If you reply to my email address, I can reply and send the photo that way if desired.  Thank you.  Carla

Answer
Hi Carla,

I can only reply through allexperts--they don't give me your email.  Please reply back and set it to *private*, and I'll give you my email so you can send me the pictures.

The bloating could be edema, which may be something serious, but send me the pics so I can take a look and then we can discuss what to do.
