Could she be pregnant?

Question
So I have 3 turtles: 2 boys and 1 girl, and I was wondering if it was possible that the girl could be pregnant. She is almost 2.5 years old and 3.75 inches in diameter. I've seen her mate with the boys a couple of times.
Also, how would I be able to tell she was pregnant if she is?
Thanks, Rebecca

Answer
Hi Rebecca,

You didn't say what species your turtles are, but if they're species such as cooters, maps, or RES, you wouldn't be able to sex a female (or male) with complete certainty at that size.  So unless you can see distinct external characteristics, you may not actually have two males and one female at all.  Turtles look female when young, and males develop their characteristics at maturity.

The female (if really female) is too small to be gravid.  Females would generally need to be in the 6"+ range (again, guessing on the possible species).  There's no real way to tell if a female is gravid until she is about ready to lay, at which time she will typically become restless, sometimes aggressive, and try to dig.  A nesting area with packable dirt as deep as she is long is necessary for laying.

Another important point is that three turtles of any species require a very large tank.  If you have three RES, you need about a 200 gallon tank with filter rated for about double that, or an outdoor pond (ideal in Florida).  But even with a large tank, two males are likely to harass a single female to the point where it may affect her health, so separation may be necessary.  This is something to keep in mind for the future as your turtles mature.
