New born turtle, and egg

Question
Yesterday I was given a new born baby turtle (Do not know the type) And an egg. What do I do for the new little hatchling? I have a warming lamp, because she doesn't seem too interested in actual light yet. I have mexican rocks in there so she can bask, and hatchling food. Also, another on of the experts here told me Pedialyte is good to put in their water, if they aren't eating (Which she's not, but I don't really expect her to.) Her eyes are still closed, and she stays mostly still. I just need help to keep her alive. As for the egg.. well I don't know if it's still alive or not. What do I do with the egg? Thank you, all the help I can get is awesome!

Answer
Hi Julia,

It's very difficult to give you care information without more details.  You need to know what species it is--this is very important.  If it came from a wild nest, it should be returned to the nesting site.  Wild turtles shouldn't be removed from the wild, as their populations are already struggling (and in many states wild collecting is illegal anyway).  If captive bred, the person who bred it should know what species it is.

Once I know what species it is, I can provide better advice.  Don't put Pedialyte in the water; it contains dextrose (sugar) as the main ingredient, which isn't healthy for turtles.  Hatchlings can survive off the yolk sac for some time, and often don't eat for two weeks or more.  However, the lethargy and closed eyes are an indication that something is wrong.  Healthy hatchlings will hide, but should have their eyes open and will be active at least part of the time.  They are also surprisingly strong for their size.  The temperatures may be too warm or cool, for example--you need to know exactly what they are.  Again, more details would help--the exact setup, temps, etc.

As for the egg, it should have been kept in one position and it sounds like it may not have been.  If the egg was turned in any way, if the embryo was alive it probably drowned.  Turtle eggs have to be kept the same way up until hatching takes place.

If you can post back with additional information, I'll do my best to help.
