Taming..

Question
I just bought a 6 month old female Sugar Glider four days ago. She has yet to leave her cage simple because she's not wanting to come to me. Actually, last night was the first time she approached my hand to lick some yogurt off of it, but then did a squeak noise and bit me. The guy I bought her from said she was tamed for him.. But she's having a difficult time taking to me and trusting me.. Have I kept her in her cage for too long?? Or do I need to keep letting her get used to me hands? I'm nervous she'll never like me.

Answer
Congrats on your new addition ;) Sugar Gliders can be very exciting pets to own for the right person..

Please take some time to do a little research on these little ones & their bonding habits.. you can feel free to browse thru some of the earlier articles that I have available in hopes of shedding a better light on how these little ones act..

The newness of you and her new home is all a little overwhelming.. but her fears will soon fade..

Bonding is a big 1st step for trust & security in a glider + human relationship.. you might want to consider getting a bonding pouch which will enable you to physically wear the sugar baby in hopes of creating that bond.. a good time to do this is during the daytime hours as she sleeps.. during this time she will be taking in your scents and sounds which will get her to know you better and to imprint your identity into her nose.. therefore recognizing you from anyone else..

Bonding is a great time to get to know one another.. and at first she might be very crabby at any sudden sounds or movements and that is okay.. because in a way you are desensitizing her to all of these things making her more well rounded as a house pet.. do not worry about freaking her out.. she will be very secure in her pouch & will soon learn to know that all of these strange places and noised mean her no harm.. the more she is around you the more secure you and she will feel and before long that all so important TRUST will be there and you will have a great little friend :)

Remember this.. the more you handle, interact & bond with your glider the more tame she will be.. many owners give up too easily which is sad.. the entire process takes much time and determination as well as dedication..

Hope this helps & have fun being a new glider mom <3
