Sudden death in beardie

Question
Hi

We had our beardie on the dashboard of the car (with the door open) for about 10 minutes while we were loading the car.   It was at about 7am in the morning so not too hot yet.

When we next looked he was on the floor and looked frightened.  His mouth was open and he was black under his jaw. I thought he'd seen a bird which is his usual reaction.

Upon watching him he showed signs of distress.  We put him in some lukewarm water and sponged some water into his mouth.  He was arching his back almost as if he was struggling to breath.

He proceeded to become extremely weak and within about 20 minutes had died.

He gets calcium sprinkled on his crickets and his UV is replaced annually.   We don't know how old he was because we got him as a fully grown adult and we've had him for 5 years.

It was very sudden and dramatic.

Answer
Hello Claudia,

I am so sorry about your dragon!
I doubt that he got too hot being that time of day.  Do you think he ingested any type of poisonous bug or insect possibly?
Which UVB light did you use?
I don't think it was anything you did.  Perhaps a bird did scare him & he had a stroke.  He sounds like an older dragon, perhaps 10+ years of age.  There are cases where they have had a heart attack or a stroke.
The only true way to know what happened is to get an autopsy done on him.

I am sorry for your loss.  That is always so devastating to lose them suddenly like that.
