Question
Hey Diane,
I have a crested gecko thats about a year old... I want to get another pet to put in his cage but i'm not sure what is compatible with him... something simple that can live in his environment... (a frog, another... cheaper lizard... etc...) - is there anything aside from another crested? perhaps a different gecko.. or something??  Thanks in advance,
Rob

Answer
Hi Rob,
There really is nothing else that you can put in your Cresteds cage as that temperatures, lighting(uvb and daylight) humidity, diet and housing are different in ways than any other critter.  Housing different species can and does cause diseases as that some critters are carriers of disease that doesn't affect their species but does affect other species.  Crested's actually prefer to be alone in their cage. There are no other geckos that can be housed with the crested either. Males can never be housed together..females..its possible if the cage is big enough(at least 30 gallon) but even that does not guarantee they WILL get along.  Males and females, same as above but you will deal with breeding issues.
As I said, sometimes two females can get along if given enough space and remember that since they are climbers and live in trees, bushes, they need height to their cage. Its best to provide proper uvb for a crested also.  This can be in the form of a UVB producing fluorescent tube as that the crested's don't require  temperatures above the low 80's(72-83, gradient(slowly rising from one area of the cage to the other)..which actually above 85 will cause stress to them. If you aren't sure of proper uvb, let me know and I can give you information on that.  Basically, the repti sun 5.0 uvb tube will work well for the crested.
Not sure you know this but its important to check your Crested calcium supply.  They store calcium in the roof of their mouth in sacs called endolymphatic sacs.  Again, if you need more info, let me know.
Enjoy your crested as an "only child"....they are generally a very friendly little lizard that is fine with being handled and you might even be able to get him to eat his babyfood fruit or tiny pieces of fruit from your hand as a part of his daily diet.  Enjoy watching him chase his crickets around his cage..great hunters which can be very entertaining!!!
