bearded dragon only wants mealworms

Question
Hi Pam
I got a 2 year old bearded dragon that does not eat crickets, veggies or berries!! I read up on all the food to try ( veggie ,fruits) and he will not eat anything but mealworms. I purchased meal worms from a bait shop so they are pretty large. He loves them. He has all the proper lighting and water. I just want to know how much should he be eating a day or week and how many large meal worms?? I don't want to under or over feed him. He is about 18 in. long including tail
Thanks
Helen

Answer
Typical kid!  Only wants meat and no veggies!

First, a two year old needs to learn to eat his salad.  What kind of salad have you been making?  Beardies prefer the peppery or more bitter greens.  Romaine and other lettuces just won't work well, besides, they are poor nutrition.
In the morning, put out a salad that includes three of these greens: Collards, mustard greens, dandelion greens, turnip greens, arugula and mache.  Grate or pare thin slices of butternut squash, acorn or kabocha squash, and sweet potato.  Only feed insects three times a week.
As for mealworms, I'm not sure which you mean.  The classic mealworm is not very big and has a thick chitinous shell that can cause impaction.  Bait shops do use a giant mealworm which is the same but large do to doses of steroids, great for bait but not so good for beardies.  There is also the superworm, a different species that looks just like the giant mealworm, they are Zephobas rather than Tenebrios.  You can get them cheaper online than at a petshop.  I use NYWorms but there are other good suppliers online as well.  The shell of Zephobas is much thinner and easier to digest.  At this time of year beardies start slowing down for winter and insect food so be reduced for when they go into brumation, a natural semi-hibernation.  Restrict him to about 4 supers three times a week at this point.  If he gets hungry he will start eating the salad until he stops or slows for winter.
