Question
my bearded dragon is spreading his back legs out and then twitching and i thought it was weird! he is only four months old and i dont know what to do , and i am scard for him , i dont want him to die and we thought that since we bought him cricket that were to big for him that might have caused the problom but i dont know.

Answer
Yes, the crickets that you used could be too large for him. That will cause this. It is known as "ataxia". Feeding the wrong size prey can cause gastrointestinal impaction, gastroenteritis, infection, and death.

I recommend you take him to a vet for a check, as these complications may not just go away without treatment.

Use only reptile turf or paper towels with young Beardies. No sand, calcisand, or vitasand with juvenile Beardies.

Prey size should be appropriate. No more than 1/2 to 2/3 the length of the head, and no more than 1/2 the width of the head, or equal to the space between the eye sockets. Bigger is not better, even if it is cheaper for you. Smaller is always better and easier on digestion.

Use a varied nutritious diet including veggies, not just crickets. Stay away from mealworms with young Beardies. Use calcium supplements no more than twice a month. A healthy Beardie has little need for them, and over supplementation can cause problems. And make sure you are using UVB lighting and that it is changed every 6-9 months at least, while he is young.
