turtle hibernating?

Question
I have a painted turtle that is about 4 inches long and wont eat. I have had him for about 8 months and about a month ago my sister over fed him and he ate ALOT. After that he only ate a few blood worms a week and a couple of weeks ago he stopped eating. He has a uv light and filter and plenty of space in his tank. I was reading some things on the internet and thought maybe the over feeding trigered him to go into hibernation, if he is in hibernation how do I get him out of hibernation?

Answer
Hello Megan, he could be trying to hibernate but usually it takes more then just overfeeding to do that. Do you have a water heater in his tank? If not then go and get a submersible aquarium heater and digital water thermometer (the stick on ones have proven to be up to 20 degrees inaccurate) Warm the water up to about 75-78 degrees Fahrenheit. This should help him realize that its spring time. Keep trying to feed him. Is he asleep a lot? Have you tried changing the variety? Try feeding, dandelion greens, mustard greens, pellets, crickets, and other items to get him to increase his appetite. Hope that helps, Good luck and let me know how it goes
