Question
i have had a bearded dragon for about 5 months, i have been told it is a female from its behavior and size, but today i got a proved male. the -female- seen it, and then its beard turned black, and started to bob its head quickly, after it started puffing its beard out. after that the proved male turned its beard black, but thats all.

can you tell me, can a female turn its beard black and start bobbing its head quickly? as i was planning on breeding them.

Answer
Hi Kyle, Behaviour can sometimes be a clue to gender but you can't rely on it. Females can exhibit all the territorial behaviour of males, especially this late in the breeding season. Sexing beardeds visually is fairly easy with juvenile to adult animals. I'm including a few links that have good clear photos of the technique and the differences between the sexes. If you still feel uncertain you can post some photos here of the vent area from your two beardeds (positioned the same way as they are in the sexing photos) for a second opinion.
