Question
I have beardie that is about a year old now, she is in ontario and I need to have her shipped to Yellowknife, which is about a 7 hour day with a layover I would assume. I am terrified to send her without the heat lamp or any food and will she surive? What can I do to handle this as best as possibll? thank you!

Answer
Hi Danielle,
The best thing to do is to call the airlines and ask them their options.  They will also be able to tell your what the highest/lowest temperatures will be during the flight.  There are different areas of the cargo area that maintain different temperatures.  There are also specific ways that critters are handled, if requested.  IE: loaded as cargo, baggage or other.  Ask the airline for their particulars.
Think of the 7 hr flight as your beardies night time.... temperature wise, food wise and lighting wise....
Food for that time period is not any problem. Its actually better that they are not fed the day of or even the day before shipping.
Heat can be given with the use of the chemical heat packs.
They come in a variety of "hours" from about 8 hours active to more than 40 hours active. This must be wrapped in a towel under or on the sides of the beardie.  here is a picture of the heat packs. http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog/reptile-supplies/deli-containers-shipping-bo...
Its best to ship in a small cat carrier that is airline approved.  Placing your beardie inside a zippered pillowcase (cloth) inside the carrier will help ease stress and help her to feel more secure. The cat carrier also allows good air circulation with is vital when using the chemical heat packs as they use the oxygen that is in the area to heat. We shipped a young iguana from PA to California using the small cat carrier, pillow case, (towels to prevent bouncing around) and heat packs will not problems at all...
Here are some sites that offer info on shipping.
