coccidia

Question
hi. my eastern fence lizard, kenny, has a coccidia infection. he was originally wild caught, sold to a shop, and sold to me. i have had him just shy of a year now and the coccidia has just become a problem. he is receiving vet care (since i noticed his health declined a lot) but is it possible he could've had this issue all along without showing it until now? i'm just scared that with him being wild caught he may need more health watch.

Answer
Hello Amanda,

The majority of lizards have coccidia as their normal gut flora so low counts normally do not affect them.  He has most likely had coccidia since the day that you got him but it has escalated for some reason.
Wild caught lizards almost always have high levels due to the stress of becoming captive & adjusting to a new environment.
If you can get it under control, & keep his stress to a minimum, it should not be a problem all of the time.
Is he on Albon right now?  Make sure you are giving a probiotic such as acidophiliz, benebac, or nutribac.  That will help while he is on meds to keep up his appetite.
Let me know how he is doing.
