care of milk snake

Question
I have a milk snake. I have had it for about 3 years. He is in an enclosure with aspen bedding. He recently has developed an area on his belly that is split open. It is spreading and it has some puss. I have put bag balm on it and peroxide. I am not sure if he needs some antibiotics. I can not find a vet in my area that will even look at a snake. Any information you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Eric

Answer
That doesn't sound good at all!  I would remove the aspen and go with plain paper until that heals.  But you said it was spreading which really worries me.  I'd call the vets back and ask them to recommend a vet that does see snakes.  If the area is necrotic it will need to be cleaned out and sutured.  And antibiotics would be needed as well.  Where are you located, maybe I can help finding a vet.
