furniture chewing

Question
Dear Katie,
My rabbit loves to chew on my couch and chair--to no avail, I have tried to discourage her with clapping and saying "no" loudly, chasing her away from the furniture(she is very stubborn, and always returns), supplying her with other chew objects and hard food, such as carrots and broccoli.  I know she needs to keep her teeth from growing too long, but my furniture is not an option!! I will not cage her--she has quite a little temper when confined and I don't believe in caging animals. Is there a solution that I have not yet come across that you may know?

Answer
Hi laurie,
Well you have really tried everything I would've suggested, why not try puting her in a run outside? Rabbits love to be outside in the fresh air, you could 'escape - proof' your garden so she could run around every so often. But if she must stay indoors then you could try putting a run indoors for her, this is not confinement but just a restriction on the places she can go, make the run very large and she should be fine. And a last option is to ask your local vet for a spray that is safe for animals but is not very tasty! There is one called apple bitter which is usually quite effective, but there must be more and I expect your vet will know of some.
Hope this helps
Katie
