exposed skin/sores from chewing????

Question
We have a bunny about 5 months old.  She is a Netherland dwarf.  I just noticed red, exposed skin on each side of her body near her back legs.  The sores/exposed skin are almost the size of dimes.  It looks pretty sore.  Is this from chewing?  If so, is there something missing in her diet or is there some type of medicine I should buy.  My eight year old daughter and I are very concerned.  Thank you for your help.

Answer
Dear Maureen,

The location you describe, "on each side of her body near her back legs" is not very helpful.  Do you mean on her flanks?  Inside her legs?  On her belly?  I really can't tell where these bare spots are, and that makes it nearly impossible for me to help you.

If this looks like a general fur loss problem, please try this:

But if you can send me a picture or be more specific about the location and nature of the bare spots, it would help me help you.

Hope to hear back,

Dana
